How do i keeep my dog from picking up things i dont want him to have?

my dog like eating my shoes and hes ruined two of my shoes and onr of my friends, an i feel really bad. whenever i tell him to drop it he refuses and when i try to take it he runs and by the time i try to get it out he holds such a tight grip and i dont want to ruin it even more. not only is it bad behavoir but its bad for him, sometimes hell ingest part of the shoe and throw up. how do i make him listen to me to give it back? and how do i keep him from ruining things when im not in the room, like how do i make him understand that those things are not for him to chew in away that doesnt involve me telling him alll the time?
