Would the ancient Egyptians be ashamed if they could see what Egypt has become today?
I agree. Egypt is the only country in the Middle East that has completely forgotten its identity. Even Syrians and Iranians are much more aware of whom they were pre-Islamically than Egyptians are. That said, Egyptian culture has had many rises and falls since ancient times. In the 1920s, it was paradise. In the 1950s, it was still paradise. In the 1970s, it was liveable. Today, it's hell. Maybe by the 2070s, fundamentalism will finally lose its momentum and we can enter into a 'post-Islamic' society like many Iranians would like in their country. Liberalism isn't immortal, and fundamentalism isn't either.
