Can I ever shred on the guitar?

my hands are kinda small and when i try to play like how george lynch or paul gilbert plays, like thumb over the neck and fingers slightly angled it feels weird. also when i alternate pick i think im doing it wrong, i rest my wrist on the bridge. how can i play like them?
