How does God having attributes undermine the idea of His Oneness?

I am reading about Islam and a recurrent theme is about how Islam handles the apparent contradiction between the claim that God is transcendent and a perfect unity, and the claim that He has attributes, such as knowledge and mercy. But I don't get how attributes undermine oneness. Could someone explain this to me?
