Is this purely cosmetic or does it effect the tone?

Sorry I can't be of help with this but as an Ibanez player, I'd say go with that. If you're looking in that price range, you can never go wrong with an RG550. Fantastic neck, sturdy bridge, great japanese quality. The reissues from '07 can become a little pricey, but I'm sure you can find one under 1k
