Why do they call the Dark Ages the Dark Ages when it was the era when Christianity ruled in Europe?

Especially when some people say that Christianity is the light, the right religion, etc. etc.? And why was it so horrible when religion ruled, but when the Enlightenment came around (and science began to dominate) it got better?
