Is you take the psat as a sophmore can you qualify for the nms?

i was going to be taking the psat this coming year when i will be a sophmore but the prep book i got said that sohpmores who take the test can't qualify for the national merit scholarship...is that true, and if it is is there any point in me taking it my sophmore year...
